Superfood Smoothies

Packed with fruit or veges, great for breakfast and easy to drink on the go – it’s no wonder simple smoothies have become the go-to option for many of us! No doubt you’re familiar with old favourites like smooshed bananas and berries, but have you thought about adding some new smoothie ingredients to your repertoire?

Superfood smoothies are an easy way to pack much-needed nutrients into your diet, as well keeping your tastebuds inspired with plenty of flavour. We recommend adding superfood ingredients to a yogurt-based smoothie, to add some extra protein.

What are superfoods, you ask?

Scientifically speaking, there is no official definition of a ‘superfood’. Instead, it’s a general term used for foods that are thought to be rich in nutrients, and have been linked to promoting personal health and wellness.

For a step towards healthy smoothies, we’ve put together a list of 4 great smoothie ingredients for you to add to your next blend.

Green leafy vegetables

Kale and spinach are  a good source of nutrients including folate and vitamin A, with spinach also containing iron and magnesium . Try blending these green leafy veges with yogurt, banana, a dash of milk and some frozen pineapple. And don’t be shy with the vege: the greener the better!

Goji Berries

The perfect way to add some sweetness to your smoothie – with an added hit of goji goodness! Goji berries also contain the antioxidant zeaxanthin which may assist with normal eye health. They’re also rich in vitamin C, vital for supporting immunity and general health. Our top tip? Soak the berries in water overnight for optimal blending!

Maca root

Maca is a Peruvian plant grown in the Andes mountains. Now available in powder form, this easy smoothie ingredient has been shown by this study to improve mood and energy.  Flavour-wise, maca is nutty and sweet, making it a great superfood for smoothies.

Turmeric

Turmeric contains curcumin, a compound that may help support joint health. Try it with yoghurt, frozen mango, banana and ginger for a brightly coloured nutrient blast!
